Job Description

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic will be responsible for performing skilled work in the repair and modification of diesel and gas powered construction equipment, heavy and light trucks, automobiles, and EVTs.
Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Examines vehicles to determine the extent of damage or malfunctions.
  • Test drives vehicles and tests components and systems, using equipment such as infrared engine analyzers, compression gauges, and computerized diagnostic devices.
  • Repairs, relines, replaces, and adjusts brakes.
  • Reviews work orders and discuss work with supervisors.
  • Follows checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.
  • Adjusts repaired systems to meet manufacturers' performance specifications.
  • Meets with customers to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems, and to discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements.
  • Performs routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications, and tuneups.
  • Disassembles units and inspects parts for wear, using micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
  • Repairs and adjusts engines, standard and automatic transmissions, air and hydraulic brake systems, clutches, differentials, axles and suspension, ignition and electrical systems, computerized and electronic ignition systems, steering and control systems, and generators.
  • Inspects used parts to determine the cause of mechanical failure and evaluate whether parts are still usable or need to be replaced.
  • Works on diesel power units, hydraulic systems, injection valves, and systems.
  • Compiles estimates of repair costs and secures customers' approval to perform repairs.
  • Repairs and replaces defective parts such as balljoint suspensions, brake shoes, wheel bearings, etc.
  • Inspects new vehicles for damage and record findings so that necessary repairs can be made.
  • Tests electronic computer components in automobiles to ensure that they are working properly.
  • Tunes automobile engines to ensure proper and efficient functioning.
  • Services air conditioners, and service components such as compressors, condensers, and controls.
  • Services defective carburetor parts, gasoline filters, mufflers, and tailpipes.
  • Completes service quality summaries and all other necessary paperwork.
  • Uses handheld mobile radio units to coordinate tasks and resources.
  • Uses Safety Data Sheets to identify chemical characteristics.
  • Completes Work Orders/time sheets daily and accurately.
  • Initiates material requisitions to order parts/materials needed for repairs.
  • Maintains tools and equipment in good condition; plans and organizes assignments effectively.
  • Presents a professional, positive, and helpful attitude at all times when interacting with customers, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Maintains effective communication with management, employees, and customers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. Safety Requirements:
    • Complies with and actively participates in the GCR Occupational Safety & Health Program.
    • Perform all assigned work safely and reasonably that avoids preventable injury and preventable property/equipment damage to you, coworkers, Customers, the Company, and/or the public.
      • Safely performs functions of the position including proper safety guidelines such as job hazard analysis, lockout/tagout, and wearing PPE as required.
      • Through leadership and personal example, exemplify a personal commitment to and support of the Company/Project Safety Culture.
      • Monitor subordinate safety compliance, ensuring safety is an integral part of all work activities.
      • Take appropriate corrective action (stopwork, remedial training, disciplinary action, etc.) when subordinates fail to comply with established OSH policies & procedures to prevent recurrence.
      • Immediately report all occupational injuries, unsafe conditions, and/or property damage.
      • Use and enforce the wearing of personal protective equipment.
      • Always wear a seatbelt while operating/riding in a company vehicle, or a privately owned vehicle while performing work activities or acting as an agent of the Company.
      • Never talk on the phone without hand free option or text message while operating in a company vehicle or a privately owned vehicle while performing work activities or acting as an agent of the Company.
      • Not be unfit for work due to the presence, ingestion, consumption, or inhalation of illegal drugs, prescribed medications, overthecounter drugs, and/or alcohol. Required Skills/Abilities:
        • U.S. Citizenship.
        • Ability to obtain and maintain base access.
        • Submit to and successfully pass a preemployment drug test and background check.
        • Valid State Class "B" CDL driver's license with an "X" endorsement.
        • Master ASE certification (Heavy) with a minimum of one Light vehicle certification, required (excluding ASE Refrigerant Recovery & Recycling certification). Completed OEM Training Certifications will be considered for certification requirements.
        • Must supply own hand and power tools.
        • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
        • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
        • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
        • Proficient in Microsoft Office. Education and Experience:
          • High school diploma or equivalent required.
          • Five years of recent experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. Preferred:
            • EVT certifications.
            • Prior experience working on government contracts.
            • OSHA 10.
