This class drives and operates all road construction and maintenance-of-way equipment as assigned daily, including highly complex and specialized equipment.

This is a "mandatory-testing" position that requires Drug Testing.

Examples of Duties: Operates heavy-wheeled and tracked equipment to perform day-to-day activities; may operate "bucket truck"

Operates light to heavy equipment to perform finish grade work to construct or repair ponds, dams, berms, drainage, slopes, sand drainage layers, roads, bridges, and/or other related items

Calculates proper amounts of materials required for applicable jobs

Prepares and maintains logs and records of work activity, equipment utilization, performance standards, and/or other related items

Utilize transit and laser levels to establish grades

Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications: Minimum Qualification Requirements:

Training and Experience:

High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and at least four years of equipment operation or road construction experience; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid Class "A" commercial driver's license

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics (KSAOs):

Knowledge of:

applicable light to heavy equipment

principles and practices of assigned area of responsibility

applicable specialized equipment and tools

equipment maintenance and repair principles and practices

occupational hazards and safe work methods

Skilled in:

performing fine grading and finish work

operating a variety of medium to heavy equipment

performing preventive maintenance to applicable equipment

preparing and maintaining a variety of records and logs

communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Emergency Management Responsibilities:

During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, finger and hand dexterity as well as repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, intense noises and travel.
